About Jamtent

JamTent is a music project run by MusicLinks, a charity based in The Lake District. Our programme of local venue, online and festival-based workshops using music improvisation techniques break down barriers both socially and artistically.

JamTent brings together people from diverse backgrounds to make new music in friendly ways, be it jamming online or performing for and with international audiences at Kendal Calling Festival.

Great people and great artists, making great music together.

I had a great day and am happy to have supported JamTent and MusicLinks.

What we’re doing now – The Beat Goes on Pilot Project

This short film shares some of the highlights from the past year. With JamTent postponed until 2025 after our CEO was injured in an accident, we launched The Beat Goes On. It was our first chance to run a pilot project to connect with the Cumbrian diaspora – opening up new partnerships and giving us a window into the lives, cultures, and music of people living far from their homelands. Along the way, we reconnected with familiar faces by welcoming people with SEN and learning disabilities into the mix.

JamTent at Kendal Calling Music Festival 2023 was the first time in three years that MusicLinks has been able to invite vulnerable adults and young people back to the marquee to meet and jam with bands and solo artists. This year, for the first time, we also had the pleasure of inviting artists in exile from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iran and more to JamTent. Another first was running the MicroFest in Barrow and live-linking it (via Zoom) to the activity at the Kendal Calling. It was great to meet and make music with our new friends in Barrow and with the many festival-goers who visited us for what was an uplifting and inspiring summer weekend.

Jamtent in community centres

We run music workshops with youth groups and those supporting people with disabilities. The workshops take place throughout the year building up to the JamTent at Kendal Calling.

In the workshops, we offer traditional instruments and theremins, SoundBeam and iPads. We aim to cater for people of all abilities and are always on the lookout for innovations to make our work more inclusive.

The workshops involve local artists and bands along with many from further afield appearing via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Artists perform, Take part in Q&A sessions and jam with the groups in the room. We use a variety of tried and tested methods to help the music flow and to encourage all those involved.

The warmth of feeling in the JamTent was one of the highlights of my weekend at the Kendal Calling Festival.
